Last Friday night, January 17, the Varsity soccer team beat Pinnacle High School by a score of 1 to 0. It was a very physical and fast game. The Gators had several chances to score in the first half and played very hard defensively.
In the second half, Senior forward Lainey Swanson received a ball off a throw-in and found Junior forward Olivia Yu, who put away the only score of the game.
The Gators connected many good passes that led to many opportunities to score. We hit the post twice and had a shot go off the crossbar, but the performance on defense was incredible!
Senior Defender Izzy Lee, Sophomore Center back Sophia Knox, Junior Center back Bianca Willis, and Sophomore outside back Reese Koehler were all solid in contributing to the team not giving up any goals.
Junior goalkeeper Chloe Cundiff had her best performance of the season so far and kept a clean sheet. Junior midfielders Kateri Etsitty and Nev Herzog were stellar defensively in the Midfield and played lock-down defense the entire night. The attack of Seniors Ally Brown, Micah Cagungun, Lainey Swanson, and Olivia Yu was impressive to watch.
It truly took a team effort on both sides of the ball, but the key to the game was the defensive performance by everyone. It was such a great win against a formidable opponent.
The Gators, currently ranked #4 in the 6A conference, will take on Desert Vista, ranked #6, Wednesday night, January 22, at home at 6:00 p.m. We would appreciate everyone coming out to support this great soccer team. Desert Vista is a good opponent.
Good luck and go Gator soccer!
