YEARBOOK EDITORS

PREREQUISITE: Recommendation of advisor. Open to Juniors and Seniors

Editors are responsible for learning the production of the Xavierian, which involves work on copy, layout, and photography. This
course is conducted during a class period and requires time outside of class to finish assignments. Rio Salado College credit is
available when possible and if scheduling permits.

HONOR DIGITAL JOURNALISM/ADVANCED EDITING III

CODE: JOURNALISM 3 FULL YEAR CREDIT: 1.00

PREREQUISITE: Journalism/Advanced Editing II

Open to Seniors. Required of Xpress editors.

This class is a continuation of news writing, videography, editing and visual storytelling. Students will develop the skills to produce
both written and multimedia stories that encompass Xpress, sports media and journalism. The course is structured in a workshop
format, is conducted during a class period and requires time outside of class to finish assignments which will include attending events
and activities outside of school hours.

This class is an introduction to news writing, videography, editing and visual storytelling. Students will develop the skills to produce
both written and multimedia stories that encompass Xpress, sports media and journalism. The course is structured in a workshop
format, is conducted during a class period and requires time outside of class to finish assignments which will include attending events
and activities outside of school hours.

AP ENGLISH LITERATURE AND COMPOSITION

CODE: ENG 4 AP GB FULL YEAR CREDIT: 1.00

PREREQUISITE: English I Great Books, English II Great Books, and AP English III Great Books

Required for Seniors enrolled in the Great Books program

This course centers on various genres of literature, surveying the novel, short fiction, essays, poetry, and drama in global traditions in
English studies. Students study challenging and rigorous texts. Close reading, literary analysis, critical interpretation, expository
writing, and small group discussions are emphasized. Students will take the Advanced Placement examination in English Literature
and Composition. All students will take a three-hour practice Advanced Placement examination on a selected Saturday in December
and on a selected Saturday in March or April. These exams, respectively, will serve as first semester and second semester exams. Rio
Salado College credit is available when possible and if scheduling permits. Great Books discussion sessions are required at 8th period
as scheduled.

This course is a survey of American literature in a global context from pre-colonial to modern times with emphasis on significant
literary development and culturally diverse voices. All selections are read and discussed with particular attention to close reading and
literary and rhetorical analysis. Students are expected to read and interpret difficult material independently; compositions and
research-based writing assignments are required. The Great Books program aims to develop techniques of discussion and literary
interpretation through close examination of challenging material beyond the AP curriculum. Students will take the Advanced
Placement examination in English Language and Composition in May. Rio Salado College credit is available when possible and if
scheduling permits.

AP ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND COMPOSITION

PREREQUISITE: Honor English I, Honor English II, and recommendation of Honor English II teacher or special permission

This course is a survey of American literature in a global context from pre-colonial to modern times with emphasis on culturally
diverse voices. All genres are read and discussed with particular attention to close reading and literary and rhetorical analysis in
preparation for Advanced Placement examinations. Students are expected to read and interpret difficult material independently;

ENGLISH II GREAT BOOKS

CODE: ENG 2 GB FULL YEAR CREDIT: 1.00

PREREQUISITE: English I Great Books; Required for Sophomores enrolled in Great Books program

This course emphasizes close reading of literature requiring critical thinking and literary analysis as well as the writing of expository
and persuasive essays including research papers. Multi-cultural in scope, the literature studied includes Greek and Roman mythology,
short fiction, drama, novels, poetry, two Shakespearean plays, and portions of the Arthurian legend. Vocabulary and grammar
development are emphasized within the context of literature. Projects involving independent reading and oral presentation are
assigned on a quarterly basis. The Shared Inquiry is an integral part of the course. Close reading and style analysis techniques are
further developed as long range preparation for the Advanced Placement Examinations in English Language during the junior year and
English Literature during the senior year

HONOR ENGLISH II

PREREQUISITE: English I and recommendation of English I teacher

This course emphasizes close reading of literature involving critical thinking and literary analysis as well as the writing of multiparagraph expository and persuasive essays, including a term paper. Multicultural in scope, the study of literature includes Greek
mythology, short fiction, nonfiction, drama, novels, poetry, two Shakespearean plays, and Arthurian legend. Vocabulary and grammar
development are emphasized within the context of literature. Projects in creative writing, independent reading, and oral presentation
(usually PowerPoint) are assigned on a semester basis. Close reading along with style and rhetorical analysis techniques are further
developed as long-range preparation for the Advanced Placement examinations in English Language and Composition and English
Literature and Composition during junior and senior years.

ENGLISH II

CODE: ENG 2 FULL YEAR CREDIT: 1.00

PREREQUISITE: English I

Required for Sophomores

This course emphasizes further development of skills in reading, composition, and oral communication, incorporating grammar and
usage, vocabulary, and multi-paragraph personal and expository essays, journals, research papers, and oral reports. Classical and
contemporary multicultural readings from a variety of genres, including short fiction, nonfiction, drama, and poetry, a play by
Shakespeare, mythology, Arthurian legend, and novels are studied. Students are required to give formal oral presentations on selected
topics. Close reading and style and rhetorical analysis techniques are further developed as long range preparation for the Advanced
Placement examinations in English Language and Composition and English Literature and Composition during the junior and senior
years.

ENGLISH I GREAT BOOKS

CODE: ENG 1 GB FULL YEAR CREDIT: 1.00

PREREQUISITE: By invitation only; student must be selected for admission to Great Books program

Required for Freshwomen entering Great Books program

This introductory course challenges selected honor students with an intense study of the varieties of literature. Challenging
composition assignments and listening and speaking activities suitable for ninth grade honor students are significant components of
the curriculum. In addition to readings, essays, and oral presentations demanded of English I students, Great Books students read
major global literary works to promote reflective thinking and interpretive discussion. Close reading and formal style and rhetorical
analysis techniques are introduced as long range preparation for the Advanced Placement examinations in English Language and
Composition and English Literature and Composition during the junior and senior years.
