On Tuesday, April 8, on Petznick Field, Xavier Lacrosse faced one of the tougher teams in the Arizona Girls Lacrosse Association. The AGLA has nine varsity teams. Xavier is #4, and Chaparral is #2.
Before Tuesday’s game, Xavier had three losses; Chaparral, just one. In a previous game with Chaparral, Xavier lost by just one point. In Tuesday’s game, though, Chaparral won 10-5.
Chaparral scored three goals in the first quarter and one goal with just over four minutes left in the first half, taking a 4-0 lead.
In the last four minutes of the first half, though, SO Mia Calihan scored two goals. Chaparral led 4-2 going into halftime.
Thirty seconds into the second half, JR Claire McCloskey scored on a free shot to bring the Gators to within one point of the Firebirds, 3-4.
However, Chaparral scored three more goals in the 3rd quarter, including one with eleven seconds left in the period. Xavier scored only one more time in the third — and that by SO Mackenna Packer — so Chaparral led 7-4 going into final period.
Halfway through the fourth period, Mackenna scored again, this time on a free shot beginning twelve meters from the Chaparral goal. With six minutes left in the game, the Gators were only down by two. However, the Firebirds scored three goals within the last three minutes of the game to win by five.
