On Tuesday night in the Xavier Activity Center, the Xavier Gators and the Desert Vista Thunder battled to a 34-34 tie by the end of regulation. Xavier won the overtime period 10-2 to cap off a 44-36 victory.
Only 34 points at the end of regulation? Let’s just say that both teams struggled with shooting, passing, and avoiding turn overs.
With 2:57 seconds left in regulation and Xavier trailing 31-32, Noelle Bofia rebounded her own missed shot from just past the free throw line and aggressively drove to the basket for two, putting the Gators up 33-32 (see highlight video).
With 55 seconds remaining, Cece Mlat made a free throw to give Xavier a two-point advantage; however, 55 seconds gave the Thunder enough time to tie up the score to force overtime.
It took just twenty seconds of overtime for Sade Charles, three feet behind the arc, to put the Gators up 37-34 (see highlight video).
Within the next minute, Xavier displayed a stingy defense to prevent a Thunder score (see highlight video). After setting up on their own side of the court, Lucy Sanford fed the ball to Noelle, who stood between the foul line and the top of the key. Noelle turned around, shot the ball, got nothing but net, and gave the Gators a five-point lead, 39-34 with 2:40 left in overtime (see highlight video).
Sade and Lucy sealed the deal, each with a pair of free throws, giving Xavier a 44-36 victory.
