On Petznick Field Friday night, February 2, the Millennium Tigers took immediate control of the ball at kickoff and scored the first goal of the game within the first twenty-four seconds. Shock!
Xavier’s response? Twenty-six seconds later, the scoreboard displayed a tie score, 1-1, after just fifty seconds of play.
Xavier would go on to score seven more goals and rack up eight goals for the second game in a row: Xavier wins 8-1. Millennium didn’t get many shots on goal the rest of the game.
How did Xavier get eight goals?
Goal 1: Olivia Yu directed a pass down low toward Michal Cagungun, surrounded closely by two Tigers. The ball careened straight off that group of players and spun toward the center of the field. Quinn Osborne outran two defenders to reach the spinning ball first, push it ahead of herself, catch up to the ball, and punch it in past the goalie.
Goal 2: Michal intercepted a Millennium pass about ten yards in front of Millennium’s right goalpost (goalie’s right). Dribbling to her left, she positioned herself for a well-executed, left-footed strike to the opposite side of the net.
Goal 3: Off a corner kick, the ball strayed around six yards in front of the goal. While battling a Tiger defender, Nev Herzog chipped the ball over the goalie for the score.
Goal 4: Lainey Swanson, just inside the left border of the penalty area, took a pass from Izzy Lee, dribbled about five yards toward the top border of the penalty area, and drove the ball low to just inside the left goal post.
Goal 5: Ally Brown executed a nice slide tackle on a Millennium player approximately 40 yards away from the goal to get the ball to Lainey, who dribbled to the top of the penalty area and drove the ball low and hard at the crouching goalie standing just in front of the goal line. The ball bounced away from the goalie and into the net.
Goal 6: Izzy directed a sweet pass from the sideline to Ally near the top left corner of the goal area. Ally received the ball about waist-high with her left foot, causing the ball to bounce straight up off the ground. Before the ball could return and hit the ground, she punched the ball into the net with her right foot.
Goal 7: Lucy Panayi executed a breakaway roughly 40 yards from the goal. Right after passing the penalty spot, Lucy knocked the ball into the net.
Goal 8: From two yards above the penalty spot, Elie Lopez executed a slide-tackling kick past the goalie, who had been moving toward her and had just reached the penalty spot.
