#1 Xavier took care of #8 Queen Creek in straight sets on Tuesday night at Xavier’s Activity Center: 25-19, 25-16, 25-13.
Xavier jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the first set, seeming to set the stage for a no-drama evening. However, the Bulldogs refused to roll over and quit. They produced runs of three, two, and four consecutive points, outscoring Xavier 9-3, to pull within one point of the Gators at 14-13.
However, after trading serves twice, Xavier decided to employ two four-point barrages, one to establish a 20-15 lead, and another at end of the set to finish off the Bulldogs 25-19.
The final two sets were no drama. One example is when Xavier started set #3 with an 8-0 run. To their credit, Queen Creek rattled off five straight points after falling behind 10-23. But it was too late.
Xavier meets #4 Sunnyslope on Thursday in the Semifinals after having defeated them twice during the season: 3-2 and 3-0. That’s not to say Xavier is a shoo-in to advance to the Championship match. Taking your opponent lightly is never a good idea.
This semifinal match-up will be played on Thursday, November 14, at the Xavier Activity Center at 6:00 PM. The winner advances to the State Championship Final this Saturday against the victor of the other semifinal between #7 Hamilton and #3 Corona del Sol.
Here is a montage of some of Xavier kills, blocks, and service aces from Tuesday night’s action.
