Xavier Badminton’s #4 Division 1 State ranking is outstanding, but yesterday, October 1, they faced the 2023 Division 1 State Champion and current #2-ranked Sunnyslope Vikings. Did the Gators have a chance?
Yes, they did have a chance. After going toe-to-toe with the Vikings in the Singles matches, both teams had accumulated three wins.
The Gators acquired their wins from the #1, #2, and #5 position battles.
- Maggie Henry over Schlesinger 2-0 (21-11, 21-18)
- Corinne Ladha over Economopoulos 2-1 (18-21, 21-18, 23-21) after losing the first game
- Alexa Coker over Chappell 2-1 (21-15, 18-21, 21-14)
In the other three position battles (#3, #4, #6), Reagan Perez lost in two games and Abby Alcock and Sam Riggle both lost 1-2.
So, 3-3 going into the Doubles matches to break the tie.
- The Maggie/Corinne Doubles team won their match 2-1 (16-21, 21-13, 21-15) after losing the first game
- The Reagan/Abby and Alexa/Sam Doubles teams both lost in two games.
Sunnyslope wins 5-4, but Xavier can take some positives from this #2-vs-#4 battle going forward.
Speaking of going forward (to the next day), the now-#5-ranked Gators face the now-#4-ranked Perry Pumas today.
An opportunity to reclaim the #4 Division 1 State ranking.
At it’s at home.
