Xavier Football Builds Nice Lead Deep Into the Third Quarter, but then . . .

Xavier’s Flag Football game vs Higley last night at Petznick Field featured a promising start by the Gators but eventually turned into a heartbreaking 21-39 loss.

Xavier led Higley 21-8 with 4:24 left in the 3rd quarter.

Gator defense was looking good, especially with outstanding plays by #5 Isa Ady, #10 Ruth Reyes, and #17 Isabel Perez.

In the 2nd quarter, a 23-yard pass play from #14 Ana Matuz Moran to #15 Myriah James set up a 14-yard touchdown pass to #10 Ruth Reyes. Cooper Hidalgo’s extra point made it 7-0 Xavier with 8:15 let in the first half.

After Xavier’s first touchdown, the Gators stop Higley on four downs.

Xavier proceeded to execute two great pass plays to James to set up a four-yard touchdown run by QB Matuz Moran: a 13-yard catch and run followed by a 15-yard snag. (sorry about the poor video work on the second play)

Xavier up 14-0 with 2:39 left in the first half.

Higley scored a TD and a two-point conversion with forty-one seconds left in the half. Xavier leads 14-8.

In the 2nd half, Xavier continued to roll with the help of Isabel Perez’s interception.

The Gators rolled on down to the 24-yard line, where Matuz Moran tossed the ball to Logan Duncan, who grabbed the ball at the 20-yard line and steamrolled to the end zone untouched.

Xavier leads Higley 21-8 with 4:24 left in the 3rd quarter.

But then . . . . . heartbreak began. What happened?

  • four Higley interceptions, including a pick-six
  • many long Higley pass plays
  • four Higley touchdowns with three 2-point conversions and one extra-point kick

Enough said.
