Xavier Badminton traveled to Highland High School to play in the Flying Feathers Tournament, which hosted 16 teams and 144 participants. After two days of competition — Friday, August 30, and Saturday, August 31 — Xavier secured a very respectable third place.
Following is Coach Brian McNerney’s description of the tournament’s format and Xavier’s Day 1 performance:
“Today we played three teams: Dobson, Chandler, and Desert Vista.
The tournament is set up to play 3 singles matches and 3 doubles matches against each team. If the number of wins at the end of the match is tied 3-3, the team with more singles wins gets the tiebreaker.
Our team of nine girls is Maggie Henry, Corinne Ladha, Reagan Perez, Abby Alcock, Alexa Coker, Sam Riggle, Audrey Frevola, Isabella Ballesteros, and Nadia Zielinski.
We beat Dobson 6-0.
We beat Chandler 4-2.
We lost to Desert Vista 1-5.
The top two teams in each division advance to the Winners Bracket (top 8 teams) tomorrow . We advanced and will play Perry tomorrow at 8:30am. . . As of right now we’re in the top 8 of 16 teams. “
On Saturday, the Gators beat Perry 3-3 in the quarterfinals by winning the tiebreaker. In the semifinals, they lost 1-5 to the eventual tournament champions, Sunnyslope Vikings.
Seniors Maggie Henry and Corinne Ladha earned All-Tournament Team honors! Both girls went 4-1 in tournament play.
SR Sam Riggle and JR Alexa Coker joined together as Xavier’s top doubles team. They went 2-1 for the tournament.
