Xavier College Preparatory computer science teacher, Leon Tynes,
Jr., JD, was awarded the CodeHS Inspire Fellowship. The Fellowship supports
passionate educators who expand participation in computer science for Black, Latino,
and Native American students.
CodeHS commits resources and professional development to support these educators
passionate about increasing diversity in computer science.
Tynes teaches computer science and robotics at Xavier. He works to transform STEM
education within the diverse community he serves by creating opportunities for students
with STEM challenges, as well as encouraging student innovation and scientific
advocacy.
The CodeHS team visited with Tyne’s students during Computer Science Education
Week in December and worked through the Creating Virtual Worlds Hour of Code
activity
All students at Xavier learn to code in their sophomore year. Many more go on to take
additional computer science and robotics classes. Xavier’s Computer Science Honor
Society is the largest in the state.
